Citizen Akoto Writes: The Dumsor Predictions: A Plan to Create, Loot, and Share

Congratulations to the man who confidently declared that Ghana had only five hours of fuel left when President John Dramani Mahama was being sworn in. According to him, dumsor was just around the corner. Yet here we are, three days later, and the lights are still on. His doom-filled prediction has turned out to be nothing but unnecessary fear-mongering.

Herbert Krapa, the former Energy Minister, quickly called out this claim as false. But Hon. John Jinapor didn’t stop. He went from one radio station to another, loudly repeating the same story. At first, some of us thought it best to ignore him and let them manage their issues now that they are in government. But after hearing him speak on Ekosiisen, it’s clear this goes beyond energy—it’s a calculated plan to stir panic and push their own agenda.

The supposed energy crisis seems to have been created on purpose to make Ghanaians feel scared. Why? To justify setting up an emergency fund—a perfect excuse to take public money through a “create, loot, and share” scheme. It’s no coincidence that the Chief of Staff called a quick meeting with independent power producers (IPPs) to hype this so-called emergency. Even media houses that supported them during the election were brought in to spread the story like wildfire.

But let’s think for a moment: why didn’t this “crisis” come up during the transition process? Why wasn’t it mentioned when Felix Ofosu Kwakye, the transition team spokesperson, was loudly complaining about unpaid debts and last-minute recruitments? Even on the eve of the swearing-in, when they listed challenges supposedly left behind by the outgoing government, no one said anything about fuel shortages or dumsor. Somehow, this “emergency” only became an issue after they took office. Suspicious, isn’t it?

If you pay attention, the pattern becomes clear. The President’s early appointments seem well-planned for their agenda. The Attorney General to handle the legal side, the Energy Minister to push the story, and the Finance Minister to control the money. Meanwhile, other important ministerial positions remain unfilled. Clearly, their focus is not on serving the people but on securing their plans.

Ask yourself this: who doesn’t know that people like Eric Opoku and Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, among others, are almost guaranteed ministerial appointments? So, where is this “trotro” approach to appointments coming from? Never underestimate the tactics of the old John.

But here’s the simple truth: the lights are still on. There is no fuel shortage, no dumsor. Herbert Krapa’s response has proven true, and Hon. Jinapor’s scare tactics have been exposed.

To our MPs, energy experts, and concerned citizens: Ghana needs you to speak up. If you see something wrong, call it out. This country belongs to all of us, and we cannot allow false emergencies to steal our progress. President Mahama has four years to govern, but we must hold him accountable every step of the way. Let’s not sit back and allow anyone to take advantage of the people’s trust.
