Musah Superior calls for scrapping of NPP National Council; Alleges it’s prone to manipulation
Musah Iddrisu Superior, a leading member of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has called for the scrapping of the National Council (NC) which is the second highest decision-making body of the party after national congress.
According to the outspoken former Mayor of Tamale, the National Council is prone to manipulation and therefore should be scrapped.
“Most decisions of the party should be taken by the National Steering Committee; not the National Council. The NC is prone to manipulation. I think it should be scrapped” he argued.
The NPP Constitution under Article 10(3)(1) provides for the establishment of the National Council which, subject to the decisions of the National Annual Delegates Conference, shall direct the affairs of the party in between meetings of the National Annual Delegates Conference, and for this purpose, may give such directives to the National Chairperson as may be considered necessary for the well-being of the party.
The National Council according to the NPP Constitution under Article 10(3)(2) shall consist of; voting members of the National Executive Committee, 20 Members of Parliament chosen by the Parliamentary group, regional representatives, past National Chairpersons, past General Secretaries, past Presidents, past Vice Presidents, past Presidential candidates, past Running Mates, President, Vice President, Presidential candidate, and Presidential running Mate.
However, the former Mayor of the Tamale Metropolis alleged that the National Council is not independent because of the composition of its membership and as a result is susceptible to manipulation.
Mr. Iddrisu in an exclusive interaction with this portal via a phone conversation confirmed that he would be writing formally in the coming days to the National Elections Review Committee as part of his reforms proposal to the party.
“The National Council is being manipulated by sitting Presidents. President Kufuor was okay because it allowed it to work independently but President Akufo-Addo made it useless. The National Council has a very awkward membership – you have 20 MPs being members, so if you’re a President and you have Ministers among these MPs, it means at the National Council they cannot disagree with what you want” he clarified.
Meanwhile, Musah Superior has also called for the scrapping of the polling station delegates system of the party and proposed that all registered NPP members who pay their dues should be eligible to vote in all internal elections of the party.
