Musah Superior writes: Where is the Osafo Marfo led 2020 Committee Report?

The outcome of the 2020 general elections was partially in favour of the NPP. We won the Presidential election by 51.30 %. JM scored 47.36%. In the Parliamentary election, we lost hugely. From 169 seats in 2016, our seats reduced to 137 seats in 2020.

As a result of the distressful defeat in the parliamentary election, and the reduction of nearly 3 percentage points in the presidential result from 2016, an election review committee was inaugurated in December 2020 to investigate, particularly, why our parliamentary seats dropped from 169 in 2016 to 137 in 2020.

Former Senior Minister, Yaw Osafo Marfo chaired the committee. Other members were Mrs Ama Frimpomaa Dwomoh, H.E. Papa Owusu Ankomah, Madam Elizabeth Ohene, Mr Fred Oware Hon Awal Mohammed, Hon. Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, Mrs Salamatu Forgor and Hon. Kwame Osei Prempeh.

Between December 2020 and May 2021, the committee worked flat out and submitted their report to the leadership of the party in May 2021.

The Committee was tasked to honestly and impartially review the performance of the party in the 2020 Presidential and Parliamentary elections and to produce a thorough report with wide ranging recommendations to improve the electoral fortunes of the party in future elections.

Four years down the line, we suffered the worst defeat in NPP’s history since 1996 in the just ended general elections. Yet, another committee has been announced to investigate the 2024 horrific defeat. This doesn’t appear rational to me.

The questions lingering on the minds of our party members across the country are;

1. Did the Osafo Marfo led committtee do a good job?

2. What were the findings of the committee?

3. What were the recommendations of the committee?

5. Were the recommendations implemented by the leadership of the party to address the challenges?

6. Should we continue on this tangent? Is this the way to go?

7. Do we really need a committee to investigate why we lost?

8.  Would it not serve the party better for the national leadership of the party to step aside and make way for an interim leadership to superintend our regrouping, rebuilding, and restrategising?
