PURC announces 2.45% increment of electricity tariff, 0% for water effective July 1
The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has announced a 2.45% increase in electricity tariffs for all consumer categories in Ghana, effective July 1, 2025. This decision comes as part of the Commission’s quarterly review process, taking into account various economic indicators such as exchange rate fluctuations, inflationary pressures, and rising fuel costs.
According to the Commission, this mechanism tracks and incorporates movements in key factors which are beyond the control of the Utility Service Providers (USPs), namely the exchange rate between the US$ and the Ghana Cedi, domestic inflation rate, the electricity generation mix, and the cost of fuel, mainly natural gas.
โHaving carefully analysed the existing parameters and considering the competitiveness of industries and the general living conditions of the Ghanaian, the Commission wishes to announce an increase of 2.45% across board in the electricity tariffs and 0% increment in water tariffsโ the Commission added.
The Executive Director of PURC, Dr Shafic Suleman, clarified that the adjustments are done to maintain the real value of the tariffs and to keep the utility service providers financially viable to enable them deliver on their services to consumers.
He stated an average of GHS10.3052 was used against the US dollar for the computation of the tariffs and an average projected inflation rate of 20.67% for the third quarter of 2025.
On the price of Natural Gas, Dr Shafic disclosed that the applicable Weighted Average Cost of Gas (WACoG) is USD 7.7134/MMBtu increasing from USD 7.6289/MMBtu in the second quarter review of 2025. On the Electricity Generation Mix, the PURC Executive Secretary also highlighted that the projected hydro-thermal generation mix for the quarter under review remained the same at 28.80% for Hydro generation and 71.20% for Thermal generation.
